First things first, happy New Year and I truly hope 2006 can be everything you want it to be. As I write my first article for Ms. Debbie and the Chamber Voice, I have so many thoughts and perspectives regarding the sports world that I would like to touch on. As most of you read this, the college football season is one for the books. The LSU Tigers took care of business in the Peach Bowl by whipping the Miami Hurricanes 40-3. How ironic it is for the Tigers to finish up with the Hurricanes in a year that saw Louisiana get hit by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. LSU finished the year 11-2, ranked as high as #5 in the country, and Les Miles can finally unpack those boxes in his new home in Baton Rouge.
The Texas Longhorns defeated the USC Trojans 41-38 in a classic match-up between two teams that were destined to meet for the National Championship since the first week of the season.
Our New Orleans/San Antonio/Baton Rouge Saints have ended a miserable 3-13 season, fired their head coach, and are now trying to figure out how to screw up the #2 pick in the April NFL draft. Mr. Tom Benson, owner of the Saints, has been told his team will be in Louisiana whether he likes it or not.
The New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets are playing very respectable basketball right now in the NBA. And the people of Oklahoma are trying to show the NBA that they can support an NBA team by showing up for the games in record numbers.
As we look forward to 2006, I have a few things that I would like to see happen this year:
- LSU football has a chance to win another National Championship by winning the SEC
- LSU Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams go to the Final 4 and come home with a National Championship
- The Southern Jags get back to their winning ways in football and beat Grambling in the Bayou Classic and we play that game in New Orleans
- Our local High School teams have great seasons in all sports.
- Tom Benson sells the Saints to Terry Bradshaw and he keeps them in Louisiana
- The Hornets return to New Orleans and make the playoffs
- Lance Armstrong comes out of retirement and wins another Tour de France
- Most of all, health and happiness for everyone in 2006
Talk to you next month…
