The Chinese celebrate the year 2006 as the Year of the Dog. In D’ville we’re celebrating the Year of the Cocktail.
Happy hours have been around for a long time. This is a time to unwind after work with discounted prices on the libations. This time has now become more of a cocktail event as opposed to a cocktail hour.
We have been though many fazes of social drinking. For a while shots were popular along with all the creative names. There were Sex on the Beach, Lemon Drops, Tequila shooters, and many more. These are all in the typical shot glass.
Now the focus is on the martini glass and the concoctions the are poured into it. The cosmopolitan was the drink of choice for the ladies of Sex in the City. They sat around figuring out single life with slender stemmed glasses.
The chocolate martini has a wonderful presentation and can offer you something for your sweet tooth along with a buzz. My personal favorite is the Washington Apple Martini. Touchier’s on Royal Street, has the best around. The rim of the glass is coated with crushed ice and cinnamon sugar. Every sip is pure pleasure.
It is really easy to make a martini these days. I begin with good Vodka. After that any fruit juice added to that constitutes a martini. Put a piece of fresh fruit in the glass and pour in a martini glass. It is all in the presentation.
Nez will still order a highball when asked for her drink order. She also says Wishbone for her salad dressing. (We’re trying to tell her it’s your choice of dressing, not the brand!) The younger bartenders don’t know what a highball is. The good thing is that Nez isn’t particular about her salad dressing or her highball……..just don’t leave her home.
