Is it March already? That could mean only one thing to most people… no, not St. Patrick’s Day, but March Madness for college basketball. The high school version of March Madness just ended and what a great run by our very own DHS Tigers. Coach Greg Hill’s squad made it to the Top 28 in an impressive fashion. The Tigers did lose to runner-up Red River, but more importantly they made school history and paved the way for future Tiger teams to dream big. Way to go guys, you were truly amazing.
As far as college basketball is concerned, the LSU Tigers garnered a #4 seed in the Atlanta region and played Iona in the first round. Looming down the road for the overall SEC champion (if the top seeds prevail) will be #1 Duke University in the Sweet 16. Speaking of the Blue Devils, they do have to get past the Southern University Jaguars who will be making their first tourney appearance since 1993. The LSU Lady Tigers received a #1 seed in the San Antonio region and will face Florida Atlantic. As I looked over the bracket, this is by far the weakest of the four and the Lady Tigers have a great chance of making it to the Final Four, yet again. I am sure hoping that Semoine Augustus and crew will finally cut the nets down in late March.
Spring is a mere few days away (as of press time), which means that the major league baseball season is upon us. I am crossing my fingers that my favorite team, the Atlanta Braves can win their 15th division title in a row and somehow win it all. High school baseball and softball are entering the district races and our local teams look prime to make a nice run at winning the big one. Good luck to all of our local teams and stay tuned to see how all of that turns out.
Our own New Orleans Saints will be making the second selection in the NFL Draft later this spring. Most experts believe that the Black and Gold will select Matt Leinart, the All-American from USC. I’m not so sure that Mr. Leinart is the answer to replacing the now departed Aaron Brooks. I believe the Saints will make a big push for Drew Brees, free agent QB from the Chargers, and if they are lucky enough to sign, they may trade the pick for some extra picks. One thing is for sure, whatever the Saints decide, it will probably have most fans scratching their heads.
Well as they say in the movies, that’s a wrap. If I don’t get a chance to write an article in April, I apologize, I have some priorities to take care of. In case you are wondering, I’m getting married. Until next time, support those local kids as they battle on the fields of green each day.
