Going Global

Marine Technical Surveyors Inc. has gone global. This company formed in January 1993 employs over thirty people locally with others out of-state. They are hired to supervise the loading of vessels all over the United States and foreign countries. Their travels have lead them to Trinidad, Holland, Belgium, Mexico and China. Owners Tommy Prejean and Chris Zeringue are pictured with Captain Gou on the deck of a ship in China. Is this what Tommy really does while Chris handles the business?

Going Global
Passengers from Majestic America Line visited Donaldsonville December 6, 2007. Passengers of the riverboat American Queen boarded buses at Oak Alley as part of the Creole Tour package offered by the steamship company. The group toured Rossi’s to meet primitive artist Alvin Batiste and then on to the River Road African American Museum for music and storytelling. The tourists from areas such as Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Maryland came to Donaldsonville to find out what makes the gumbo African, what makes the jambalaya Creole, what made a free person free, what happened to the fort at Fort Butler, what makes a tomato Creole, and why do we eat red beans and rice on Monday? The costumed storytellers entertained the group while John Gray with the Michael Foster Project gave them the musical history tour of the jazz funeral and second line dancing at the Bicentennial Jazz Plaza. After visiting downtown Donaldsonville the tour headed to Laura Plantation in Vacherie. There are more tours planned with a total of three in December.

Chamber director Pam Gregoire views art work with Joy and Dave Dubreuil at Caffe Deville. Art work was displayed at various businesses in the downtown area for the Art on the Avenue held November 30, 2007.

Tail-gating is a major part of football games. Most people grill hamburgers and hot dogs or cook jambalaya before the game. The Kocke’s do it differently…. they tail-gate with their cement truck. The truck is a major part of the DHS games as Carlo Kocke’s son, John, is part of the winning DHS team. The truck air horn can be heard after each touchdown.

Graduation ceremonies were held October 23, 2007, at the George Blum center for the Effective Black Parenting Class. Pictured with Councilmen Raymond Aucoin and Reverend Charles Brown are graduates Shawn Brown, Cindy Cantrell, and Melody LeBlanc along with Wanda August, Certified Parenting Instructor. The eight-week training places emphasis on parents modeling and teaching love and understanding, pride in blackness, self-discipline, good school habits, and good physical health habits. The course highlights tips and strategies that focus on the Effective Praise Method, Changing the Home Environment, The Ignoring Method, The Time Out Method and others. Wanda August is a past Chamber of Commerce Teenager of the Year.

Christmas volunteers Cathy Landry, Janice Templet, and Murlene Diez lend a helping hand with the decorations. The ladies were spotted in Crescent Park.

The tour bus makes a lovely backdrop for the two hundred year old oak tree at our Bicentennial Jazz Plaza decorated for the holidays.

Naomi Carrier, founder and director of Talking Back Living History Theatre, is pictured above. Ms. Carrier held an interpretative workshop for area residents interested in the art of storytelling. Ms. Carrier collaborates with the Sam Houston Museum, the Texas Parks and Wildlife, Texas Commission of the Arts, and the Houston International Festival. Four different stories were told at the museum and poetry was read by Mrs. Juanita Dandridge for the Creole Tour.
