There are dozens of African American feature films shot on location in our state. The exhibit includes a surprising list of favorites such as THE TOY, DRUM, QUADROON, LET’S DO IT AGAIN, RAY and many more. It provides a rare glimpse and historical examination of black screen images dating back to the 1930’s.
The Vintage Black Movie Poster Exhibit will be on display at the Old State Capitol in Baton Rouge beginning February 12, 2007 through March 12, 2007. The opening reception will be held February 16, 2007, at 6:30PM with the film BLACK ORPHEUS (1959).
The posters and movies chronicle the long journey of this country’s first African American stars, including Dorothy Dandridge, Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte, Pearl Bailey, Spencer Williams, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, and Lena Horne. Each forged a role for black entertainers that countered or reinforced stereotypes while creating a thriving, independent culture in American cinema and theatre.
